Amaro Montenegro

Amaro Montenegro Recipe

Amaro Montenegro is an apéritif  which means it’s served before a meal to awaken the appetite or a
digestif to aid in digestion after a meal.
Amaro Montenegro is said to have a heavily guarded recipe using approximately 40 herbs, spices, and botanicals from all over the world. It is rumored that only one person knows the recipe in its entirety as part of the distillation process is started at one location and finalized at a second. Taste experts speculate some of the ingredients used are: dried orange peel, vanilla, lavender, coriander, allspice, wormwood, and licorice root.
Amaro Montenegro is beautifully balanced, starting lightly sweet and ending with bitter notes while carrying aromatics all the way through from start to finish. It truly is amazing.
Amaro Montenegro is making a splash across the craft cocktail scene as more bartenders are discovering that its flavor profiles enhance and, in my opinion, elevate a cocktail to the next level. Every time I have a drink with it, it seems to awaken all flavors. It’s a fantastic ingredient and a definite favorite.
Here is one of my favorite recipes coming from one of our top 10 bartenders of 2017, Jasmine Garcia (@jazzyleegarcia):
  • 2 Oz. Rittenhouse Rye
  • 1/2 Oz. AmaroMontenegro
  • 1/2 Oz. Luxardo syrup from the cherry bottle
  • 1/2 Oz. Fresh lemon juice
  • Egg white from 1 egg
  • Chocolate mole bitters
  1. Process: place all ingredients in a shaker tin and give a vigorous hard dry shake.
  2. Next, add ice to the shaker and shake again vigorously.
  3. Double strain into a chilled glass, garnish with rosemary.
